ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael (HG 1/144) Iron-Blooded Orphans: CUSTOM BUILD (MINOR)

This is my first minor custom build and painted kit, as I'm new to the hobby, it is nowhere near perfect nor my ideal expectation. However, in a way, I'm pretty pleased with the result and grateful that I learnt a lot through this experience.

Here is the summary of my customization and painting:

  • Inner frame & dark body parts:
    1. Spray primer > grey
    2. Airbrush painting> black + some silver
    3. Brush painting > exposed parts of arms, legs & waist  > silver & copper
    4. Top coat > gloss
  • Body/armor parts and backpack/wings:
    1. Scribing > legs & wings
    2. Airbrush primer > white
    3. Airbrush and brush painting > most body parts and wings > white & blue
    4. Brush paint rest of the parts
      • chest & shoulder parts > yellow
      • swords > yellow + some orange + some gold
      • eyes, waist & shoulders > pink
      • details > black + some silver
    5. Top coat > gloss
    6. Enamel panel lining
    7. Water decals
  • Final top coat for all parts > flat/matte

I used acrylic paints as I have already own some paints for painting tabletop miniatures, and is not toxic compared to lacquer and enamel paints.

The three big mistakes I made in this build are:

  • I purchased a handheld airbrush kit with mini air compressor for airbrushing, but the air pressure is simply too weak to do proper airbrushing, therefore most of my body/armor parts were not prime and paint properly, and I have to brush paint to complete most of my painting.
  • Didn't research & read enough about scribing, went to purchase a cheap set of chisel from Daiso and use it to scribe panel lines on the legs, almost ruined them. Then I got myself a Tamiya scriber, got better in scribing, but still mess up some parts (especially the wing at the back) as I scribed some of them in a wrong direction that I was intended.
  • Because I can't wait to get my kit finished, somehow I decided to do the final top coat of my kit in a rainy day (even though many advises online said not to), that totally RUINED  it as the coat forms white visible spots on my painted kit. Tried to clean it with ethanol but it also wiped out some of my paints, I have to redo most of the painting again. One of the worst day in my life and will never forget this lesson: NEVER do topcoat/airbrush on a wet/rainy day!

I have also learned: use putty to fix scribing mistake and hide seam line, kit disassembly, gunpla posing, and gunpla photography

I am aiming to learn: better at air brushing, preshading, weathering, better at scribing, and make lesser mistakes

Overall I had a lot of fun building this kit! :)

Now, let's awaken the one and only Gundam Frame that help to end the Calamity War and lead the creation of Gjallarhorn : ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael piloted by Agnika Kaieru and McGillis Fareed
